TOA Summit is a four-day CE Course conference by the Texas Optometric Association, bringing together like-minded occular professionals from across the state. Learn from transformative thinkers and connect with other individuals thriving in the industry.
During this conference, you will be empowered with the resources and knowledge you need to pursue excellence in your practice.
At the end of 2019, Brenda Jo Avery, who will always be affectionately known as “Bj,” hung up her TOA spurs after thirty plus years of service.
After years in print journalism, radio, and television, Bj joined the TOA in 1989 as the Legislative Director. In 1991, Bj became the TOA Executive Director. She moved to legislative affairs in 1995, and resumed the Executive Director role in 2003, where she has been ever since. Bj served on eight different committees at AOA over fifteen years, and she served in all of the leadership roles of the International Association of Optometric Executives—serving as President for 2009—2010. Bj was also the Chair of the Patient Choice Alliance from 2006—2010.
Bj was awarded the prestigious TOA Distinguished Service Award in 2012 and the UHCO William D. Pittman Leadership Award in 2004. She served with many Austin area organizations, including Prevent Blindness, Austin. On Bj’s watch, the TOA has been changed for the better in so many areas. Bj has presided over fifteen legislative sessions, including some of Texas Optometry’s most important victories.
She was at the helm during our move into Austin proper, as the TOA purchased three different properties in Austin. During her tenure, the TOA went from a renter to a landlord.
Listing Bj’s accomplishments in no way encompasses what she has meant to the Texas Optometric Association. Bj has been the heart and soul of the TOA almost since the day she walked through the door. Her greatest legacy is, and will always be, the friendships she has made with so many leaders and other members of the TOA.
Bj is our family, and there is no better compliment that we, the members of the Texas Optometric Association, can pay to her than to say that her heart and soul will live on in the organization she worked so hard to build.
THANK YOU for thirty unforgettable years, and Best Wishes in your future endeavors!
We believe in working hard and playing harder! That’s why the TOA is excited to bring you some of the best activities and entertainment available in the Austin, Texas area.
